Is Locking Your Motorcycle Handlebar to the Right Really Safe from Theft?

Some motorcycles allow the handlebar lock to be positioned facing to the right, and this position is considered safer than locking the handlebar facing to the left. 

Although it doesn’t fully guarantee security, locking the handlebar to the right makes it harder for motorcycle thieves to carry out their actions.

Quoted from Kompas Otomotif, when the handlebar is locked to the right, inserting a T-wrench into the motorcycle’s keyhole becomes more difficult. A T-wrench is commonly used by motorcycle thieves to break the handlebar lock.

When applied to a motorcycle like the Honda Beat, locking the handlebar to the right causes the keyhole to be partially covered by the handlebar, making it quite difficult for thieves to use a T-wrench.

Locking the handlebar to the right makes thieves take longer to break the lock. As a result, they are more likely to look for another motorcycle that is easier to steal.

On the other hand, when the handlebar is locked to the left, the keyhole isn’t covered by the handlebar, so breaking the lock can be done faster and more easily. Locking the handlebar to the right is actually designed to hinder thieves.

However, this does not apply to sport motorcycles, which have the keyhole located on the upper section. On sport bikes, whether you lock the handlebar to the right or left, the keyhole remains exposed and is not covered by the handlebar.

Even so, to improve security when parking your motorcycle, it is strongly recommended to use additional security locks, which are now widely available on the market.
