Ever Wonder What the Letters “E” and “F” Mean on the Fuel Gauge?

As a motorcycle rider, you’ve probably often seen the fuel gauge indicator with the letters “E” and “F.” But do you know what those two letters actually mean?

Most people assume the letter “F” refers to “full,” while “E” is thought to mean “emergency” or “empty.” 

Even so, a fuel gauge showing the letter “E” does not always indicate that the fuel in the tank is completely empty.

The “E” sign indicates that about 10 to 15 percent of the tank’s capacity remains. It serves as a reminder for the rider to refuel as soon as possible.

For example, if the full tank capacity is 5 liters, when the indicator shows “E,” the remaining fuel is only about 500 milliliters (0.5 liters).

These “E” and “F” indicators can be found on all types of vehicles, whether they use an analog or a digital gauge. 

The fuel gauge works with the help of a float that sends a signal to display how much fuel is left in the tank.

So, when the fuel gauge shows “E,” don’t panic right away because there is still some fuel left—just not much. You can use the remaining fuel to look for the nearest gas station.
